The Forgotten Fifteen

How Bury triumphed in British football's worst year

John Kerr during 1985 promotion celebrations

John Kerr

John Kerr sadly died in 2006. He is the only member of Bury’s promotion squad from the 1984/85 season who is longer with us. Former teammate Craig Madden attended his funeral.

Having started his career with Tranmere Rovers, where he scored 38 goals in 154 appearances, John moved onto Stockport. From Edgeley Park he signed on at Gigg Lane for £22,500 on transfer deadline day in 1985. He didn’t find the net in any of his eight appearances during the run-in but the following season scored six goals in all competitions before moving to Belgium to play for KV Ostend.

After a spell in France, John’s playing career came to an end after he suffered ligament damage whilst playing for Bangor City in the League of Wales. He then moved onto coaching youngsters at Chester City, Shrewsbury, Walsall and Cardiff City.
